Sodium Silicate functions as a deflocculant, preventing the slip from forming clumps or sediments, which allows the slip to flow easily and penetrate into the small crevices of molds effectively. Sodium silicate is used as a vibration-reducing agent in casting to lower viscosity and reduce the amount of water needed to keep the clay mixture fluid. Additionally, it is used to create crack effects in ceramics and aid in stability.
Generally, vases or bottles are formed on a wheel, resulting in relatively thick walls. Sodium silicate is applied to stretch the walls of the vase and create aesthetically pleasing crack patterns.
